In 1990 Cair Aviation Limited took the opportunity to purchase from
Vickers the original patented design and manufacturing rights
for the Ottfur Quick Release Units. The decision to purchase
was made on the basis that it seemed very unlikely that Vickers
would continue to provide manufacturers support and although at
the time there were ample ex-MOD spares available from various sources,
in the long term it was considered that manufacturers support would
be safer if in the care of a company dedicated to the gliding movement.
From the start it was appreciated that the OM 100, originally designed
to the requirements of BCAR Section E, did not meet those currently
defined in JAR 22 and, therefore, its use would always be limited
to types which today are generally considered as vintage.
This raised the question: Was it possible to update this innovative
and original piece of British engineering and extend its life even
further into the future?
With this question in mind and in parallel with the task of establishing
a support service for the OM 100, much thought and time was given
to the possibility. As a result two new types of Ottfur, the
CW 300 and CW 400 have been developed. The principle design
features, geometry and key components of the OM 100 have been retained
but re-packaged in new casings using modern fabrication and protection
processes. |
